Whose Feet?

Posted in apps, bilingual, and nonfiction lesson

Before STAAR week, Pre-K had fun guessing Whose Feet? in the Jackson Library. After reading My Eyes are Big and Red, the kids guessed what animal on which the story was based. Then they had to guess what animals were on the poster just based on the feet. At the tables, they played the Whose Feet? game on the app, colored the feet of Jan Brett animals, and  listened to the fun Maple Leaf songs.

4th Grade Catapults

Fourth and fifth graders problem-solved as they constructed catapults in the Jackson Library last week and this week. The groups were all given 20 popsicle sticks, 7 thick rubber bands, a plastic spoon, a pom pom, and these instructions. They were not required to use the instruction sheet; it was just a guide. After about 12 minutes, they tested their catapult (3 tries), and then went to the tables to redesign for about 5 more minutes. Finally, they launched their catapults again. It was interesting to see the improvements they made the second time around!

Two Bad Ants

Posted in picture book lesson, reading skills, and technology

Third graders were given just the text portion of the story Two Bad Ants by Chris van Allsburg and had to analyze the text to figure out the location of the ants. Then I showed them the picture so they could see if their predictions were accurate. After the story, they played a Classtools game I customized with questions from the story and had the option to explore the Archibald’s Adventure simulation game.

Pre-K Farm Fun

Last week in the Jackson Library, Pre-K read farm animal stories. After singing Hap Palmer’s Big Red Hen song, we read Barnyard Banter and the kids identified the animals by their sounds. They explored the Canticos Chickies/Pollitos app to create their own song, listened to the Chick song (featured also in different languages), and decorated an egg. During check out, we enjoyed Alina Celeste‘s Pollitos song video.
