Kindergarten Studies Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Posted in holiday, and picture book lesson

Last week in the Jackson Library, kindergarteners studied the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We read The Sweet Smell of Roses and discussed the impact his words had on changing laws in America. The monolingual kindergarten classes colored and completed an emergent reader (by Simply Kinder) and sang songs, while the bilingual class colored a Spanish reader (by The ABC Bilingual Patch) and sang this awesome Spanish version of “We Will Overcome” from a class on YouTube. All children watched the MLK BrainPop video about his life.

Kindergarten Uses AR to Manipulate a Fire Truck

Posted in nonfiction lesson

Last week in the Jackson Library, kindergarten used an augmented reality app, Quiver, to manipulate a virtual fire truck.  After reading Camiones de Bomberos/Fire Trucks, we labeled parts of the fire truck and discussed the functions of each. Then at the tables, the kids used Quiver to see their fire truck page in 3D and to spray the hose, raise the ladder, drive the truck, and sound the siren. During check out, we listened to Mr. 7 Yea!’s firefighter story and songs about what to do if there is a fire.

Posted in apps

Pre-K and kindergarteners enjoyed activities based on Ehlert’s Leaf Man book this past week! We created leaf creatures using the magnetic board and manipulative leaves. The kids had to guess  the creature the child was making. Then they used the Labo Lado Leaf app to create virtual leaf creatures during check out. Fun!

Count the Monkeys

Posted in picture book lesson

Kindergarteners and first graders sure did have fun this week in the Jackson Library counting the monkeys! We read this hilarious book by Mac Barnett and then the kids designed their own monkey counting page like the ones that DIDN’T appear in the story! At the computer station, they played a monkey numerical order game and checked out books. Fun!
