Little Blue and Little Yellow

Posted in kindergarten, and picture book lesson

Kindergarten loved the Lionni story, Little Blue and Little Yellow. We discussed what a ‘classic’ book is and how this book is still loved even though it is very old. At the tables, they tore pieces from yellow and blue squares to create their own little yellow and little blue and then they drew a game for them to play together. Check out our library bulletin board!

Kindergarten Studies Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Posted in holiday, kindergarten, and picture book lesson

Last week in the Jackson Library, kindergarteners studied the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We read The Sweet Smell of Roses and discussed the impact his words had on changing laws in America. The monolingual kindergarten classes colored and completed an emergent reader (by Simply Kinder) and sang songs, while the bilingual class colored a Spanish reader (by The ABC Bilingual Patch) and sang this awesome Spanish version of “We Will Overcome” from a class on YouTube. All children watched the MLK BrainPop video about his life.

Pierre the Penguin: Narrative Nonfiction for Kindergarten

Posted in kindergarten, and nonfiction lesson

Today in the Jackson Library, kindergarteners enjoyed a narrative nonfiction story about a penguin with a problem. Since Pierre the Penguin is an adorable rhyming book that tells how a scientist helped a penguin solve a problem, I used this book to teach story elements. Then the kids created their own neoprene suit for Pierre like the one Pam made in the book. We did a penguin dance after check out!

Kindergarten Uses AR to Manipulate a Fire Truck

Posted in augmented reality, kindergarten, and nonfiction lesson

Last week in the Jackson Library, kindergarten used an augmented reality app, Quiver, to manipulate a virtual fire truck.  After reading Camiones de Bomberos/Fire Trucks, we labeled parts of the fire truck and discussed the functions of each. Then at the tables, the kids used Quiver to see their fire truck page in 3D and to spray the hose, raise the ladder, drive the truck, and sound the siren. During check out, we listened to Mr. 7 Yea!’s firefighter story and songs about what to do if there is a fire.

Posted in apps, holiday, and kindergarten

Kindergarteners are welcoming October this week with the picture book, Plumply Dumply Pumpkin by Mary Serfozo.  Kids sequenced events in the story culminating with a prize-winning pumpkin in the end. At the tables, we played pumpkin weighing and carving games on the Starfall Pumpkin app. During check out, we watched the story in animated form and sang along about October with Jack Hartmann.
