First and second graders had fun on Digital Learning Day today in the Jackson Library! They used a new app to play a spelling game called Catchy Words. They have to find the letters in augmented reality, ‘catch’ them with an iPad, and place the letters in boxes to spell a mystery word. We watched Kirsten Hood‘s video to see how to do it. Fun!

First graders in the Jackson Library learned how to take surveys after reading Groovy Joe: Ice Cream and Dinosaurs by Eric Litwin. After reading the story, the kids asked each other about favorite ice cream flavors and marked it on their paper using tally marks. Then we used Jersey Teacher’s Ice Cream pictograph sheet (TPT) to draw representations of the data. Finally, they listened to Groovy Joe songs during check out. Who knew graphing data could be so much fun in the library?

Last week in the Jackson Library, first graders learned about Mae Jemison from the book, Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed. I like how it is a biography written like a narrative for the younger reader. It talks about not letting anyone deter you from reaching your goals and dreaming big dreams. After the story, the kids put together a little booklet about Mae’d accomplishments (from The Mailbox). Follow Roda here! #BlackHistoryMonth

Pre-K created an African American musician “quilt” in the Jackson Library! As they worked, we talked about Nina Simone and played her “I’m Feeling Good” song. Then we used Liz Buchanan‘s primary version of the song as a chant for the kids to sing the “I’m Feeling Good” lyric at the end of each line while they worked. Fun! Thanks to Liz for adapting the song (linked below) to make it choral for Pre-K! They sang ‘I’m feeling good’ for the second part of each verse. The kids loved it. I found a Spanish version of the original song for the bilingual Pre-K class to sing. I have a note to purchase the Nina Simone: Jazz Legend and Civil-Rights Activist book for next year!

The fourth grade Fenway and Hattie book club met today during lunch and played fun games about the book! First, we played a Quizizz game to review the middle chapters. Then the kids solved a crossword puzzle and played a fun computer mystery game created by the author, Victoria Coe! I’m setting up a fun Breakout EDU game for next week!

In the library, fourth graders listened to the read aloud Strong to the Hoop by Coy, found the active verbs in a Seesaw activity I created, and wrote their own exciting introduction to a narrative. Several wrote about their recent aquarium field trip. Check it out!

Last week in the Jackson Library, Pre-K had fun with hearts. After reading My Heart is Like a Zoo by Hall, the kids used hearts and shapes to create their own dogs. Cute!

Kindergarten enrichment loves our new @playosmo game! When I was at Ogle, I took photographs of the kindergarteners and uploaded their names into Osmo Words in my online account. Then they play in ‘Versus’ mode (pairs) to see who can earn the most points for correct letters to spell the person’s name. The part the kids enjoy the most is calling over the person whose picture is displayed and getting ‘expert’ help. Fun!
