Compound Eggs

Posted in games, holiday, and picture book lesson

Last week in the Jackson Library, second grade learned about compound words. After reading Walton’s Once I Was a Bull…Frog book, the kids came up to the poster to match the second half of the word to the first. It helped to put the picture of the compound word on the second half. (ESL modification) At the tables, they created compound words with plastic egg halves. This part of the lesson is from The Lesson Plan Diva. I gave each group the same words written on plastic Easter egg halves and when the timer started, they had to put them together to create compound words. The first two winning groups to put all of their eggs together correctly received graphic novel/magazine passes. Check out the video of the kids at work!

Fiction or Nonfiction?

Posted in nonfiction lesson

Last week in the Jackson Library, second graders learned about the differences between fiction books and nonfiction books. We used Shannon Miller‘s Cantada series Fiction or Nonfiction ? book and listened to the song. Then the kids practiced categorizing different magnetic mini book covers using the dry erase easel. At the tables, the kids cut and categorized different book titles. Learning about different types of books is fun!

Seeds of Kindness

Posted in character education, picture book lesson, and technology

I had second grade predict what the rabbit and mouse would do when the threatening birds approached in the gorgeous book, If You Plant a Seed. They are happily munching away on the fruits and vegetables from their garden when the birds approach with menacing looks. Among the ‘hide your fruits and vegetables’ and ‘hurry and eat them’, a couple of kids thought of the idea to share them. We discussed the power of a kind deed and brainstormed ways they could show an act of kindness before they left school that day. I gave them the maple seed model pattern and they were to write an act of kindness on that seed and then they let the seeds float up and away. Hopefully, it gave them something to think about as they ended their day in the library.

There’s a Zackson at Jackson!

Posted in holiday

Last week in the Jackson Library, second graders read There’s a Wocket in My Pocket (we used the read aloud app because the creatures make cute noises) by Dr. Seuss. Inspired by the adorable creatures, the kids created their own creatures to hide in different places that rhyme. Fun! Check out their creations!

The Sequel to Interrupting Chicken

Posted in reading skills

Second graders read the sequel to Interrupting Chicken, Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise in the Jackson Library. They put the picture of the elephant in each traditional story and thought it was so very funny! At the tables, they created door hangers – one side with ‘Interrupt Me!’ and one with  ‘I’m Reading!’  I adapted these from the Candlewick Press activity kit by drawing little chicken on one side and Papa on the I’m Reading side.

The Three Snow Bears

Posted in picture book lesson

Right before the break, Jackson second graders analyzed story elements in Jan Brett’s The Three Snow Bears and created their own snow bear puppet. During the story, the kids used the pictures and poster to put the story elements in their places. Then during check out, the kids created their polar bear puppet. They used them to retell their favorite parts of the story. We watched the read-aloud video at the end of the lesson. The kids enjoyed this twist on Goldilocks!

Lucia La Luchadora

Posted in apps, picture book lesson, and reading skills

Second graders had fun in the Jackson Library today with Luca la Luchadora. We read the story about how a little girl’s abuela encourages her to stand up to playground bullying by showing her a vintage luchadora costume and telling her about the legacy of the luchadora’s power. When Lucia wears the costume, she not only stands up to bullies but also rescues Coco the puppy when he is stuck on the slide. By the end of the story, she realizes that she doesn’t need a mask or costume to stand up for herself. We identified causes and effects in the story and created a Luchadora or Nino mask from Nino Wrestles the World. At the tables, they chose from either a Lucia mask or a Nino mask and decorated it. They played a fun luchadora mask game on the iPads. Thanks to Shawne Briggs, Sheffield Primary Librarian  in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, for ideas for this lesson. Check out her Wrangler Library tweets!

Creepy Carrots!

Posted in holiday, picture book lesson, and TTESS 1819

Second graders came to the Jackson Library today and had fun with an October classic, Creepy Carrots! We discussed cause and effect, read the story, and they identified causes and effects involving Jasper the rabbit. Sometimes they had to identify the cause and sometimes the effect.

CAUSE                                                         EFFECT

Jasper started taking carrots                   The carrots began to follow him

Jasper had nightmares.                            He called his dad in his bedroom.

Jasper was worried.                                  He devised a plan/idea.

Jasper built a fence.                                  The carrots were happy.

At the computer station, the kids played Carrot Crave on the Cool Math website.

Ninja Boy and Second Grade

Posted in apps, and reading skills

Last week in the Jackson Library, second graders predicted what would happen to ninja boy when he tried to sneak out of his classroom in Ninja Boy Goes to School. Then we inferred about what his dad was doing when he put a large box on a high shelf…did Ninja Boy get in trouble?  The kids used picture clues and context clues to see why the author compared ninja boy to a tree, a flamingo, and a gorilla. At the tables during check out, the kids used the Ninja Sight Words app to slice the words as they heard them but to leave the other words alone. We sang “Kung Fu Fighting” to end our lesson.

Not Quite NARWHAL

Posted in picture book lesson

Second graders had fun with a new book today by Jessie Sima, Not Quite NARWHAL. They had fun comparing the little unicorn in the story to its narwhal family and then to other, larger unicorns. They were happy to see all of the animals living together at the end. At the computer station, they played a narwhal/unicorn adventure game, Molly’s Adventure. Then we watched Mai’s exciting interactive read-aloud. Learn more about Jessie Sima and her amazing books on her blog link below.
